Pires Mendes Palace

The dialogue between heritage and contemporary education

The project consists of the alteration, extension, and rehabilitation of the Palacete Joaquim Pires Mendes, classified as a Property of Public Interest and located in Campo Grande, Lisbon. It is a single-family palace with an eclectic architectural language, whose volumetric and decorative composition brings together classical, baroque, romantic, and Art Nouveau references. The intervention includes the main building and two existing annexes in the rear courtyard — the former barn and wine cellar, and the caretaker’s house — integrating them into a unified reading of the built ensemble.

The proposal aims to conserve the most relevant heritage features, combining the preservation of architectural, constructive, and decorative values with the adaptation of the building to a new use as an educational and university services facility. The intervention acts in a restrained and surgical manner on the interior spaces and roofs, providing the ensemble with the necessary infrastructure and regulatory conditions, while ensuring its contemporary functionality without compromising its original identity and character.

In Campo Grande, a 19th-century palace opens to modernity, preserving memory while welcoming 21st-century education.
