Interior and exterior alteration and expansion of an existing building on Rua dos Navegantes, in Lisbon’s Lapa neighborhood, previously composed of four residential units — one per floor — all vacant and in an advanced state of deterioration. The intervention proposes converting the entire building into a single-family residence, including the addition of two floors and the extension of the rear façade, fully rehabilitating both the building and the courtyard within a historically significant urban context.
The proposal prioritizes the preservation of the most significant heritage elements of the main façade, particularly the crowning balustrade, articulating them with a contemporary functional reorganization.
Inside, the layout was rethought to create a continuous and light-filled family living experience, taking advantage of the building’s verticality and natural light, further enhanced through the introduction of new openings and skylights. The rear courtyard is transformed into a private garden, incorporating a small swimming pool and establishing a direct relationship between interior and exterior spaces, while preserving the existing tree and green density of this shared “green lung” within the urban block.
