Universidade Lusófona Porto

A careful extension in the heart of Porto

Nominated for “Building of the Year 2021” by ArchDaily, in the Education category.

The Universidade Lusófona do Porto project consists of the extension and rehabilitation of an existing building, intended to expand the university’s teaching facilities. Set within a consolidated urban context and bounded by buildings of recognized architectural value, the original structure, dating from the 1950s, did not hold individual heritage significance and was part of an environment marked by successive interventions that had given it a fragmented and degraded appearance.

The proposal seeks to qualify and complete the built ensemble through a controlled extension and a volumetric reorganization that respects the alignments, heights, and proportions of the surrounding context. The interior layout was redefined to meet the functional requirements of the university program, preserving the existing structure whenever possible and clearly distinguishing the contemporary intervention from the original construction, ensuring architectural coherence, urban integration, and suitability for its new use.

In the center of Porto, the university grows with sensitivity, integrating the new into the existing urban fabric.
